북한의 상황 The Situation in the North

이번 달 가장 큰 소식은 올림픽입니다! 많은 사람들이 알고 있듯이, 2018년 동계 올림픽은 평창에서 열립 니다. 문재인 대통령의 초청에 북한이 참석하겠다고 의사를 표한 것이 큰 뉴스이지요. 김정은은 이번 참석 을 통해 북한 체제 선전을 하고 싶어 하는 듯합니다. 운동선수들, 오케스트라, 치어리더, 보안요원 등을 포 함한 수백의 사람들이 갑작스럽게 남으로 보내져, 조국을 위하여 최선을 다해야 하는 상황이 되었습니다. 김정은은 올림픽에서 자신의 업적과 전략을 선전할 것입니다. 삼지연 오케스트라 단장인 현송월의 방해 활 동을 포함한 '김정은의 협상전략'에 대한 기사들을 볼 수 있습니다. 개막식에서의 남과 북이 통일 깃발을 들고 공동행진을 하는 것과 남북 연합 여성 아이스하키팀이 꾸려진 것이 눈에 띄는 소식입니다. 그러나 모 든 상황이 장밋빛은 아닙니다. 모두가 예상할 수 있듯이, 의사소통의 어려움이 있겠지요. 연합팀은 수십년 을 지나 남과 북의 언어가 얼마나 달라졌는지를 알게 될 것입니다. 또한 많은 이들이 문재인 대통령이 김 정은에게 너무 많은 선전의 자유를 허락했다고 느끼고 있으며, 이로 인해 화가 난 상태입니다. 북한 주민 들 사이에서는 올림픽이 이슈화되고 있다고 하는데요, 운동선수들을 부러워하기도 하고, 정말 TV에 나오 는 것처럼 남한이 잘사는지 궁금해한다고 합니다. 그러나 북한대표팀이 받아야 하는 집중훈련 및 집중 정 신교육, 그리고 성과가 좋지 못할 경우의 일을 부러워할 수는 없을 것입니다. 일련의 행사들이 올림픽 전 에 계획되어 있지만, 여러모로 문제점도 발견할 수 있습니다. 김정은은 최근 행사 중 하나를 취소했습니 다. 또 북한은 2월 8일 인민군 칭립일을 축하행사로 대규모 열병식을 계획하고 있습니다. 또 김정은은 올 림픽 기간동안 전투훈련과 기동훈련, 이념훈련을 명했다고 합니다.

The big news this month all has to do with the Olympics!    As most of the world knows, the 2018 Winter Olympics are being held this month in Pyeongchang, Kangwon Do, South Korea. What's big is that North Korea has agreed to accept South Korean President Moon Jae-in's invitation to participate.    It seems that Kim Jong Un sees a lot of opportunities to gather propaganda benefits from participating.    All of sudden, North Koreans will be descending on the South by the hundreds as orchestras and cheerleader squads, security agents and others, in addition to the athletes themselves, will be doing their best to put on a good show for the Homeland. Kim Jong Us will be using the Olympics to promote his achievements along with other strategies. We are getting reports describing Kim Jong Un's negotiation strategy, including sending beautiful Hyon Song Wol, Samjiyon Orchestra leaderas a distraction.    A big item is North and South marching together in the opening ceremony under the "unification flag" and the combined women's ice hockey team.    But all is not rosy.    As we fully expect, there are problems communicating.    The combined team is discovering how different the languages of North and South Korea have become through the decades.    Additionally, there are a lot of people in South Korea who feel that President Moon is giving Kim Jong Un a lot of free publicity and are upset about it.    It is a hot topic among ordinary North Koreans who may envy the athletes and wonder if the South is really as rich as it appears in TV dramas. At the same time, they do not necessarily envy the training and intense indoctrination regimen the North Korean team goes through or what might happen if they do not do well. A series of inter-Korean events are planned leading up to the Olympics but there are problems there as well.    Kim has just canceled one.    He is also planning a major military parade on the occasion the reinstated February 8th date to celebrate the foundation of the Korean People's Army. Along with all this, he has ordered ideological preparation, combat training and war games during the Olympics.

한편 누구에게나 삶은 여전합니다. 인도주의적 수출은 대북제재로 여전히 어려움을 겪고 있고('조선의 그 리스도인 벗들'은 손톱깍기등의 위생 키트를 보낼 수 없었습니다), 단동시의 북-중 무역 수지는 악화되고 있으며, 북한의 식량부족도 여전합니다. 상황은 더욱 어려워져서, 북한 당국은 주민들의 집을 뒤져 식량을 찾아내고 있다고 합니다. 예전에 말씀드렸던 대로 외부와 접촉을 시도하는 자들은 고문을 당하고 투옥되고 있습니다. 또 수만명이 한파속에 야외나 관광사업개발로 동원 되고 있습니다. 요즘 당국은 엄중하게 당 공 직자들도 퇴비생산을 확실히 해내라고 관리한다고 합니다. 또 최근 중국산 제품에 대한 단속이 있었습니 다.

Meanwhile, life--such as it is--goes on for everyone else.     This means struggling with sanctions affecting humanitarian shipments (our good friends at Christian Friends of Korea cannot send in hygiene kits because they include fingernail clippers), Chinese-Korean trade hurting the city of Dandong, and North Korea's ongoing food shortage.    It's gotten so bad that authorities are ransacking people's homes looking for food stashes. As we've seen before, attempts to communicate with the outside world bring torture and imprisonment. Along with all of this, people are being sent into winter work and tourism projects by the tens of thousands.    This time the government is really serious, making sure that even party officials are out their making manure.    Chinese products are no longer legal in North Korea, either.

감옥에 수감된 형제들을 위해 기도하며 Remembering Our Brothers in Prison

북한에 억류된 세 명의 미국인들을 위해 기도합니다: 김학성 교수님, 김상덕 교수님(토니 김), 김동출 목사 님. 그리고 북한에 수감된 6명의 한국인들을 위해 기도합니다. 최근 국가인권위원회가 지난 9월 이 6명의 상태를 조사해달라고 청원서를 넣었습니다. 이 청원이 좋은 결과를 맺을 수 있도록 기도해 주십시오. 6명 은 한국인 목사님 세 분- 김정욱 목사님, 김국기 목사님, 최춘길 목사님-과 복음을 위해 북한에 다시 들어 간 3명- 고현철, 김원호, 그리고 무명-입니다. 안타깝게도 새로이 알려드릴 소식이 없습니다. 이들이 집과 가족의 품으로 속히 돌아올 수 있도록 기도해주십시오. 2018년은 석방이 가득한 해가 되기를!

We continue to pray for the three Americans imprisoned in North Korea:    Kim Hak-song, Tony Kim (Kim Sang Duk) and Dong-chul Kim. We also continue to pray for six South Koreans held in the North. The South Korean National Human Rights Commission petitioned the UN in September to investigate the condition of these six. Pray that there be a good result from this. They are pastors Jeong Wook Kim, Kook Ki Kim and Choon Gil Choi and North Korean defectors returning to North Korea to share the Gospel, Hyeon Chul Koh, Won Ho Kim and Anonymous. Unfortunately, we have nothing new to report. Pray with us that these all be released to their homes and families soon.    May 2018 be the year of full release!

생명의강학교 The River of Life School

2월 말까지 생명의강 학교는 방학입니다. 교사들은 쉼을 갖고, 다른 활동들을 하며, 다음 학기를 준비합니 다. 과학선생님과 버스 운전기사를 구하고 있습니다. 영어 교사도 새로 구하려 합니다. 하나님께서 적임자 를 보내주시도록 함께 기도해주십시오. (저희 학교에) 관심을 가질 만한 분들을 알고 계시면, 저희에게 알 려주십시오.

School is on vacation through the end of February.    Teachers are getting rest, enjoying other activities and preparing for the next school year.    We need a science teacher and a bus driver.    We could also use a new English teacher.    Please join us in praying for the Lord to send us the right people. If you know anyone who might be interested, send them our way.

 

네 번째강 프로젝트 The Fourth River Project

하나님은 언제나 신실하십니다! 2017년 말 저희는 예상치 못했던 큰 지출을 해야만 하는 상황에 처했습니 다. 지난 달에 말씀드렸듯이, 저희는 트럭과 제설기구도 필요했습니다. 하나님은 이 상황가운데 찾아오셔 서 저희가 전혀 예상하지 못했던 방식으로 모든 필요를 채워주셨습니다. 하나님께서 하신 일들을 다음 기 회에 적어보도록 하겠습니다.

God continues to be faithful!    We ran into some unexpected major expenses that needed to be met by the end of the year 2017.    As we mentioned last month, we also needed a truck and snow plow.    The Lord came through and provided for all these needs and more in truly unexpected ways.    Some day we will be writing up all the surprising things that He has done.

삼수령 센터 건축의 다음단계로 나아가고 있습니다. 가장 고심하고 있는 부분은 삼수령 센터를 확장하게 되면 물 공급을 어떻게 해야 하는가 였습니다. 저희는 삼수령 목장의 우물(기존의 우물)을 테스트 했고, 그 우물에서 충분한 공급을 받을 수 있으리라는 계산을 하게 되었습니다. 물 공급을 하기 위해 다른 방법을 찾으려면 수천달러가 더 들었을 것입니다. 하나님, 감사합니다!

We are also moving forward with the next phase of constrution on the Three Seas Center.    A major concern has been getting all the water that is needed for an expanded center.    We had the existing well at the Three Seas Ranch tested and have found that it will provide more than enough.    This save us tens of thousands of dollars exploring for more water.    Thank you, Lord!

We are leaving for our intercessory prayer pilgrimage to Israel in a couple weeks. Unfortunately, Liz Torrey will not be able to join us.    She came down with a serious case of

the flu that has been affecting so many people this winter.    She is over the worst of it but is staying behind in the States for two weeks to regain her strength.    Ben is traveling back as scheduled.    Liz will arrive shortly after the group leaves for Israel and continue resting at the Three Seas Center before things pick up for the opening of school the last week of February. Please keep her in your prayers and all of us going on the pilgrimage.

삼수령 센터의 다음 단계 건축을 위해 이번 겨울에 시작될 모금캠페인을 준비중입니다. 북한 개방을 위한 연구, 훈련을 위한 장소를 마련하기 위한 이 일들에 보내주시는 여러분들의 후원과 기도에 감사드립니다. We are working on a fundraising campaign to kick off this winter in preparation for the next phase of our overall Three Seas Center plan.    We appreciate your prayers and your support for this work of building a place dedicated to preparing people for the opening of North Korea through research, study and training.
