북한의 상황    The Situation in the North

동계올림픽과 핵이라니! 이 무슨 조합인지요. 대북관계에서 이 두 가지 주제가 계속 언급되고 있습니다. 북한의 평창동계올림픽 참가는 2월 내 뉴스 1면을 장식했습니다. ‘북한 치어리더들의 미소’, ‘남한에 있는 북한 주민들에 대한 과도한 경계’, ‘북한 선수들이 맥도날드를 사러간 사건’, ‘평화에 대한 환상’, ‘북한이 오기 위해 남한이 지불한 비용’, ‘미국과 북한은 무슨 대화를 하였을까’, ‘왜 대화를 해야 하는가’, ‘협상자 리에는 누가 앉게되는가’ 등등 많은 이야기들이 있었습니다. 3월 9일에 시작되는 패럴림픽이 있음에도 불 구하고, (북한에서 온) 모두가 집으로 돌아갔습니다.

The Olympic Games and nuclear weapons!    What a combination.    These are the two topics that continue to dominate the news in relation to North Korea.    North Korea's participation in the Winter Olympics at Pyeongchang grabbed headlines throughout the month of February. There was a lot of discussion about the North Korean cheerleaders' synchronized smiling, hyper-surveillance of the North Koreans in the South, NK athletes buying McDonald's, the illusion of peace, the cost that South Korea paid for the North Koreans to come, possible talks between North Korea and the U.S. and not possible talks, why there should be any talks, who is going to negotiate, etc. Everyone has now gone home even as the next wave is preparing for the Para-Olympics that begin March 9th.

핵으로 인한 대북국제제재는 계속 강화되어, 일반 주민들에게도 더욱 영향을 미치고 있습니다. 휴일은 이 제 즐겁지 않고, 중국으로 일하러 나갔던 사람들이 돌아오고 있으며, 북한의 가족들에게 보내는 송금수수 료는 더욱 올라갔습니다. 북한 리더십에게는 큰 영향을 미치지 못하는 것 같습니다. 김정은은 대북제재가 그들에게 영향을 미치지 못할 것이라고 분명히 말한 바 있으며, 북한은 대북제재의 허점을 찾아 악용하고, 수력발전으로 생산한 전기를 팔아 현금을 확보하고 있습니다. 또, 시리아에 화학무기를 팔아 현금을 확보 하고 있습니다.

Meanwhile, international sanctions against North Korea, because of their nuclear weapons program, continue to be increased with a growing impact on the ordinary person--holidays aren't much fun, people are returning from China, the cost of sending money to family in the North is rising--without any appreciable impact on the leadership.    In fact, Kim Jong Un has stated clearly that sanctions will never work against them and the North continues to find and exploit loopholes and sell their hydro-power for cash.    Then there is the cash in-flow from selling chemical weapons supplies to Syria.

주민들이 바쳐야 할 상납금과 2교대제는 여전합니다. 긍정적인 측면으로 보자면 근무지에 더욱 오랜 시간 있어야 한다는 것은 도둑질을 할 기회가 더 많아진다는 것입니다... 당국이 다자녀에게 혜택을 준다고 하 지만, 여전히 가진 것이 없는 이들이 너무 많고, 모든 어려움들을 극복해내기엔 충분치 않은 것 같습니다. Along with everything else demands for contributions from people and double shifts continue; however, looking on the bright side, increased time at work provides greater opportunity for pilfering...    Still, there are just not enough people and the government is increasing benefits to those who have more kids, yet it does not seem to be enough to overcome all the other issues.

감옥에 수감된 형제들을 위해 기도 Remembering Our Brothers in Prison

북한에 억류된 세 명의 미국인들을 위해 기도합니다: 김학송 교수님, 김상덕 교수님(토니 김), 김동출 목사 님. 그리고 북한에 수감된 6명의 한국인들을 위해 기도합니다. 최근 국가인권위원회가 지난 9월 이 6명의 상태를 조사해달라고 청원서를 넣었습니다. 이 청원이 좋은 결과를 맺을 수 있도록 기도해 주십시오. 6명 은 한국인 목사님 세 분- 김정욱 목사님, 김국기 목사님, 최춘길 목사님-과 복음을 위해 북한에 다시 들어 간 3명- 고현철, 김원호, 그리고 무명-입니다. 안타깝게도 새로이 알려드릴 소식이 없습니다. 이들이 집과 가족의 품으로 속히 돌아올 수 있도록 기도해주십시오. 2018년은 석방이 가득한 해가 되기를!

We continue to pray for the three Americans imprisoned in North Korea:    Kim Hak-song, Tony Kim (Kim Sang Duk) and Dong-chul Kim. We also continue to pray for six South Koreans held in the North. The South Korean National Human Rights Commission petitioned the UN in September to investigate the condition of these six. Pray that there be a good result from this. They are pastors Jeong Wook Kim, Kook Ki Kim and Choon Gil Choi and North Korean defectors returning to North Korea to share the Gospel, Hyeon Chul Koh, Won Ho Kim and Anonymous. Unfortunately, we have nothing new to report. Pray with us that these all be released to their homes and families soon.    May 2018 be the year of full release!

We continue praying for America missionary to Turkey, Andrew Brunson.    He spent over a year in captivity and the situation just seems to get worse.    The Turkish government has made totally false accusations against him.

 

생명의강학교 The River of Life School

3월 2일 생명의강 학교가 개학하였습니다. 2010년 3월 학교를 개교한 이래, 9번째 해입니다. 학교는 여러 가지 도전과제 앞에 섰습니다만, 하나님께서 우리를 유연하게 하시고, 하나님의 길로 인도하시려는 하나님 의 방법임을 알게 됩니다. 일이 쉽기만 하면 일상이 되어버려서 우리는 하나님의 인도하심과 공급하심에 머물기보다는 습관과 패턴을 따라 뒷걸음치고 말지요. 현재 학생수는 10명으로, 신입생이 없는 상황입니 다. 저희가 무엇을 할 수 있을까를 생각하며 하나님의 뜻을 구하고 있습니다.

또 생명의강 학교에 물이 없는 상태입니다. 지난 겨울은 아주 춥고 건조했습니다. 생명의강 학교와 하사미 마을에 들어오는 수도관이 얼고 말라버렸습니다. 5월까지는 “강”에 물을 공급할 방법이 없습니다. 삼수령 센터 또한 물이 없는 상태로 2월을 보냈습니다. 다행히 삼수령센터의 동파는 수리하여 고쳤고, 생명의강 학교가 시간에 맞추어 들어올 수 있었습니다.

학교의 물 공급 상황으로 인해 1학기는 삼수령 센터에서 대부분의 수업을 진행하게 될 것 같습니다. 많은 이들이 살고, 노동하는 바로 이곳에서 말입니다. 쉽지 않겠지만, 모두가 하나님께서 무엇을 하실지 기대하 고, 학교의 새로운 방식을 시도해 볼 기회인 것을 보게 됩니다. 그 기회 중 한 가지는 학교 전체가 제주에 서 열리는 국제 모임에 참석하는 것입니다(학생수가 적으니 가능한 일입니다.) 나라와 열방을 위하여, 그 중에서도 북한을 위하여 기도하고 예배하는 아주 귀한 시간이 될 것입니다. 초대장을 클릭하시면 보실 수 있습니다. 이번 학기가 모두에게 특별한 새 학기가 될 수 있도록 함께 기도해주십시오.

School starts up again on Friday, March 2nd.    This will be our ninth year since the school first opened in March, 2010.    We are starting with several challenges but we see these as God's way of keeping us flexible and open to His leading.    When things are routine, it is all too easy to fall back on habits and patterns rather than leaning solely on God for guidance and provision.    Our student body is small--just 10 students in middle and high school with

no new first year students.    We are seeking God's will concerning anything that we need to do differently to change this.    The River of Life School is also without water!    We have had a very cold and very dry winter.     The Hasami Village water supply to the school and its neighbors has frozen and dried up.    There is a good chance there won't be water to feed the "River" until May.    At the same time, we, at the Three Seas Center went without water for the month of February. We thank God that our systems are now unfrozen and repaired--just in time for the School to come to the Center!    We are planning our first month of classes to be largely at the Center, where many of us also live and work on other things, because of the School's water situation.    It will be a challenge but everyone is excited about what God is doing and sees this as an opportunity to explore new ways of doing school.    One of those is to take the whole school (something we can do because we are small enough) to the Global Gathering in Jeju Island.    This promises to be a great time of worship and prayer especially for unity of the Church and this nation with a strong focus on North Korea. 네 번째강 프로젝트와 삼수령센터 The Fourth River Project and the Three Seas Center

지난 2월, 이스라엘 중보기도 성지순례를 잘 마쳤습니다. 참여한 모두가 복된 시간을 보냈습니다. 함께 기 도해주셔서 감사합니다.

We had a wonderful intercessory prayer pilgrimage to Israel in February.    Everyone who participated was blessed.    Thank you for your prayers.

앞에서 말씀드렸듯이, 삼수령 센터는 새로운 도전 과제 앞에 서있습니다. 저희는 지난 여름부터 살게 된 새 집이 너무 좋습니다. 공동체는 함께 자라가고 있으며, 서로에 대한 이해가 깊어지고 있습니다. 행정팀 에 미셸 심 자매님이 새로이 함께 하게 되었습니다. 센터는 학생들 같은 젊은이들로 채워졌고, 그들이 그 들의 시간을 이 곳에서 보내기 시작했습니다. 이것이 정말 좋은 일이지만 동시에 쉽지 않음을 모두가 생각 하고 있습니다. 학생들은 센터 건축을 위해 노동을 하고, 땀을 흘렸으며, 지난 학기 동안 수요일에 센터에 서 시간을 보내는 것을 정말 좋아했습니다. 잠시 동안이나마 그들이 이 곳에 머물지 못할 이유가 무엇이겠 습니까? 무엇보다 하나님의 뜻 안에서 우리는 주님께서 일을 이루실 것이라 믿습니다. 물론, 여러분의 기 도는 계속 필요합니다!

As you read above, we are facing some exciting challenges here at the Three Seas Center. We love our home here that we moved into last summer.    The community here is growing together in love and better understanding of one another.    We have welcomed another sister, Michelle Shim, to join our adminstration team.    At the same time, it looks like the Center will be filled up with young people as our students come to spend their days with us.    Most of the teachers already live here at the Center.    Now we will be bringing our students right into our home for school.    We all think it will be very good but we also know that it won't necessarily be easy. Still, our students put a lot of their sweat and labor into building this place and they loved spending their Wednesdays here last school year.    So, why shouldn't it work out for them to be here all the time--at least for a while?    Above all, we are confident in our Lord to make it work as long as we stay in the center of His will.    However, that doesn't mean we don't need your prayers!

삼수령 센터의 공동체 마을 건축을 위한 기금 모금을 계획하고 있습니다. 건물이 완공되면, 그 건물은 학 교 건물이자 일부 학생들의 집으로, 또 다양한 행사를 위한 공간으로 사용될 것입니다. 4월에 시작할 땅고르기를 시작할 수 있도록 공급해주시기를 위해 기도하고 있습니다. 이 땅고르기에는 급수탱크 설치도 포함 되어 있는데, 이 급수탱크는 목장 아래의 우물과 건축 예정지, 그리고 현재 이미 지어진 건물들을 연결하 는 작업이 될 것입니다. 이 공사를 하게 되면, 지난 달 있었던 물 문제가 해결될 것입니다. 이 작업이 끝 나면 바로 공사를 시작할 수 있었으면 좋겠다고 생각하고 있습니다. 우리가 모두 앞으로 나아갈 수 있도 록, 그리고 일들이 순적하고 안전하게 진행될 수 있기를 함께 기도해주시면 좋겠습니다.

We are also developing a fund raising campaign to begin work on the next phase of the Three Seas Center, the Community Village.    Once completed, that will house our school and many of the students as well as other Fourth River Project events.    We are praying for provision to begin major earth moving in April.    This includes putting in a new water tank and water main from the well up at the Ranch down to the construction site and on to our current building.    This would also solve the problem we had in February once and for all. We want to continue right on into the construction phase as soon as that is done.    Please join us in prayer that we have all that we need to move forward and that all the work go smoothly and safely.
